1st Breath

This little photographic project is a nod to the work of American Artist Edward Ruscha (1937), but utilizes my artistic genre to celebrate the act of the 1st breath upon surfacing from underwater; some are of the photos are of recreational swimmers, others are of freedivers.

I chose this project for its unique quality as everyone comes up for air differently; some relaxed and with joy, some as a triumph, others gasping as the need for air is so urgent.

I find the parallel of the 1st breath of life in human birth, quite compelling, which was also a motivation in making these images.

Some images are taken from videos stills, therefore the quality varies, however, the narrative remains the same.
